The heightened sensivety of the picture plane may no longer permit sculptural illusion, or trompe-l'oeil, but it does and must permit optical illusion. The first mark made on a surface destroys its virtual flatness, and the configurations of a Mondrian still suggest a kind of illusion of a kind of third dimension. Only now it is a strictly pictorial, strictly optical third dimension... one into which one can look, travel through, only with the eye.

Der Mensch liebt alles, was seiner Bequemlichkeit dient.

The art historian thinks with the mind of a scholastic. Typologies. Recensions. The world seen through the old men's eyes, looking with that fixedly backward stare that intends to find ladders of precedent, ladders by which of means to climb, slowly, painfully, into the experience of the present. Into a present that will already have been stabilized by already have been predicted.

Drug addiction is a characteristic of modernity. It is the correlate and counterpart of shock.

The old artists, some working today, are still making an illusion, even Mondrian, and others whose ideas were in a three dimensional concept, worked on canvas constructively whose ideas were on a kinetic basis. They also called for colour in three dimensions but their work was physically static and the colour of their materials were accepted to a point. The end products of their research was a man-made environment. Life does not exist on a two dimentional basis. When one walks down a street the sensation is not only a visual one, but a tactile and sound experience. The artist can no longer concern himself with illusions, he must work on a realistic basis.

And New York restaurants now have a new thing - they don't sell their food, they sell their atmosphere. They say, "How dare you say we don't have good food, when we never said we had good food. We have good atmosphere." They caught on that what people really care about is changing their atmosphere with a minimum of actual food. Pretty soon when food prices go really up, they'll be selling only atmosphere. If people are really all that hungry, they can bring food with them when they go out to dinner, but otherwise, instead of "going out to dinner" they'll just be "going out to atmosphere."

Do you love your guns?

God?

The government?
       - Yeah.

The government?
       - Fuck yeah!

"To many people in Europe [...] facts about New Amsterdam were of no importance. A completely fictitious view would do, if it matched their idea of what a city was..."
In 1672 a French engraver, Jollain, sent into the world a bird's-eye view of New Amsterdam.
It is completely false; none of the information it communicates is based on reality. Yet is a depiction - perhaps accidental - of the project Manhattan: an urban science fiction.
At the center of the image appears a distinctly European walled city, whose reason for being, like that of the original Amsterdam, seems to be a linear port along the length of the city that allows direct access. [...] Only the large number of facilities for the treatment and storage of animal skins in the city testifies to its location in the New World. Outside the walls on the left is an extension [...] in the form of a structured system of more or less identical blocks that can extend, if the need arises, all over the island, their rhythm interrupted by a Broadway-like diagonal. [...]
All the components of the map are European; but, kidnapped from their context and transplanted to a mythical island, they are reassembled into an unrecognizable - yet ultimately accurate - new whole: a utopian Europe, the product of compression and density. [...] The city is a catalogue of models and precedents: all the desirable elements that exist scattered through the Old World finally assembled in a single place.

Under the testing of modernism more and more conventions of the art of painting have shown themselves to be dispensable, unessential. But now it has established, it would seem, that the irreducible essence of pictorial art consists in but two constitutive conventions or norms: flatness and the delimination of flatness, and the observance of mere these two norms is enough to create an object that can be experienced as a picture; thus a stretched or tacked up cancas already exists as a picture - though not necessarily as a successful one.
- Clement Greenberg: "After Abstract Expressionism", 1962
